Govilon Heritage have developed a set of 3 easy walks for all ages to help discover the magnificant history of our village. The Govilon Heritage Trails were designed after two public meetings in which residents helped identify features of special interest in the village.
You can choose to explore the village centre, Govilon canal wharf and railway, or the rural area to the west of the village. Most of the route follows all weather tracks and pathways. All three walks are inter-connected so that you can combine all or parts of all three into a longer exploration. The Heritage group has designed and installed a number of interpretation boards along the routes to help highlight the local history. The famous artist Michael Blackmore prepared two specially commissioned drawings for the boards to help visualise village scenes from the 19th Century.
The pocket size walk leaflets are available in local shops and from the heritage group priced 20 pence each. Bulk orders for local tourist companies are available from the heritage group. An accessible text only version will be downloadable from this website shortly.
For those who want to go into more detail we have designed our website history section around the leaflets. Using the routes as a guide you can find our more about village history and uncover details on what was happening in Govilon over the centuries. This section also includes information about those parts of the village which we could not easily fit into the routes.
The walks are now included within both the Blaenavon World Heritage and Brecon Beacons National Park calendar of guided interpretive walks.
