Book: The Village of Govilon in Living Memory

Foreword

Book Front CoverWales' heritage is very special and is one of the Country's greatest assets. Among the most important parts of the Nation's heritage is the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape. This unique heritage landscape was inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in December 2000 in recognition of the leading role played by South Wales in the turbulent times of the Industrial Revolution, through the production of iron, steel and coal.

Govilon village is an important part of this unique landscape with strong historic links over the Blorenge Mountain to Blaenavon. The village is uniquely positioned between rural Monmouthshire and the industrial South Wales Valleys.

We are required to protect and preserve the area's historic monuments including the canal, Hill's Tramway, Garnddyrys forge and other important remains in and around the village for future generations - but we are also charged with keeping alive the people's story.

This book helps keep important memories alive in our fast changing society. It helps establish a sense of community pride and a shared past. It is a simple book without fuss or bias, an eloquent testimony to an age which has all but disappeared.

Importantly, there are contributions from local children which helps establish their roots and ensures continuity between past, present and future generations.

This little gem, first published to celebrate the millennium, is worthy of a place in every home in the village and many bookshelves well beyond Govilon.
