Govilon Heritage is a small group who gathered in response to the inclusion of the southern part of Govilon village in the recently established Blaenavon Industrial Landscape World Heritage Site (BILWHS).
At a Public Meeting on the subject of Govilon’s place within the BILWHS, Blaenavon Project Director, John Rodger MBE gave a presentation of what this could mean to us who live and work here in the village. County Councillor Verona Nelmes subsequently gathered those would later become the founder members of Govilon Heritage in the autumn of 2003 to discuss the implications of this and explore the opportunities which BILWHS made possible.
The Govilon Heritage Site Committee was founded in May 2004 with ten members. We had members from all parts of the village community, church, chapel, school and local businesses, and both the Blaenavon Project Director and the Countryside Heritage Warden of the BILWHS are co-opted members. We are developing strong links with other organisations including the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, Monmouthshire County Council, and Herian. We are presently being supported financially by grants from Rural Community Action, Monmouthshire County Council and Awards for All Wales.
The Govilon Heritage group is now dormant.
